Condition Assessment and Rehabilitation Design for 100-Year-Old Concrete Aqueduct:


A major, northeastern US municipal water agency established a project to convert a 100-year-old, un-reinforced concrete aqueduct from gravity service to pressurized service to ensure flow of 236.8 MGD. This required producing an extremely smooth shotcrete finish to derive an N-value of 0.012.

Problem Solving:

CPI served the customer on the condition evaluation inspection, design, and quality control aspects of this project.

  • CPI performed interior and exterior (test pit) inspections of the 7.5 miles long concrete aqueduct and of the 2 miles of rock tunnel leading into the aqueduct.
  • The rehabilitation design was based on providing a relatively thin, lightly reinforced, structural shotcrete liner that would act compositely with the existing aqueduct to resist pressurization and meet the high-flow requirements, while minimizing cross sectional area and diameter loss.
  • CPI carefully researched and specified the requirements for achieving the tight shotcrete finish, using wet shotcrete to enhance quality, prevent shrinkage cracking, and increase productivity.

Customer Benefits

All project submittal deadlines were met, most were early. This aqueduct will serve as a primary and back-up conduit for the municipality's water supply.
