A major metropolitan waste water collection agency had initiated a restoration project on a 75-year-old brick masonry sewer that was critical to one of their regional collection systems. The project got off to a slow start because of poor design details and constructability issues; essentially no progress had been made in the first 6 months of the schedule.

Problem Solving

CPI was originally brought into this project to provide technical engineering and quality control oversight/support services. However, shortly into the project, CPI's role was revised by the customer to include redesign of some important aspects of the project, including shotcrete mix design proportions, corrosion-resistant material selection, reinforcement details, and shotcrete finishing requirements. CPI's design efforts got the project on track, made the work constructible, and ensured that approximately 5 miles of the trunk sewer was successfully structurally rehabilitated.

Customer Benefits

  • CPI's know-how and expertise in sulfide corrosion severity, concrete rehabilitation and associated materials performance was instrumental in providing the customer with a microsilica-modified wet shotcrete mix design that could be placed and finished to meet flow requirements and provide the appropriate corrosion resistance and structural re-strengthening required.
  • The project was completed within time and budget constraints, and quality was greatly enhanced due to CPI's onsite Q.C./Q.A. efforts.
  • As an added bonus, CPI saved the customer approximately $250,000 in pressure-chemical grouting costs for infiltration control by making a change in the chemical grout specified and used. The grout originally specified for stopping infiltration was not designed for rapid water cut-off and large volumes of it were being pumped. CPI selected a grout with a much faster gel time and the infiltration was stopped using much less grout volume, resulting in substantial cost savings.
